yeah, downloading the zip, unzip and browsing on ipad doesn't open the files in safari - instead, it opens the files in a 'file viewer' window - kinda lame...

using the airtag locate feature kills the airtag battery - usually it's on bt beaconing, but in locate mode it uses a ultra-wideband

oh, re the tire needing to rotate, that's a battery saving feature. all of the tpms sensors 'sleep' and only emit when in motion.

Tpms operates exactly as it does now but instead of 1 receiver in the car you have 4 very short range ones that can only pick up the signal from a foot away
By rotation I mean swapping front back left right to even out wear patterns
My Subaru knows when this happens and knows which tyre is now the front left tyre if it goes flat

Hi guys,
2 months ago downgraded my Atto 3 to install custom apps, and re-installed last firmware.
Everything went perfect.

A week ago came to Spain latest firmware 1.6 (april 24) vía OTA. I tried to upgrade but failed, so I had to do a Factory reset and upgrade by USB.

While it may be technically possible, if the manufacturers spend the extra effort to code all EV brands and models (EVs would include cars, vans, buses and whatnots) and continuously update their chargers whenever new models are released, who do you think will foot the bill?

Yes. Public chargers (and perhaps even some wallboxes) can identify the EV to which they are connected.

The next question to ask is whether that identification is used and stored, right? I'm not sure of any definite answer other than, yes, for sure (at least sometimes and in some jurisdictions).

In Malaysia, a couple of the big networks of public chargers offer 'AutoCharge', meaning that if an EV is registered with the public charger company (meaning registered via the app on the smart device of the EV owner), then simply plugging the EVSE into your EV starts charging (both the battery and drain on your wallet). I know naught about the public charging network in whatever jurisdiction you call home (if you're lucky enough to have one).

My limited understanding is that the EV's MAC address is the information that is exchanged during communication with the public (or private, in the case of your home or your employer's wallbox) charger. As usual, this is covered by an international standard; the standard in this case is ISO 15118 Road vehicles - vehicle to grid communication.

I do not have access to a copy of ISO 15118. You can buy a copy for Swiss Francs CHF 216. If you happen to have a copy, I'd be happy if you share it. See below.

Getting back to public charging in Malaysia .... the apps of several public charger networks offer 'AutoCharge' to EV owners. When signing up to the public charger app, the app invites the user to state the car license plate alpha-numeric and the VIN (vehicle identification number). My guess is the public charger network assumes you are ignorant of your EV's MAC address.

My limited understanding is that if you have offered that optional information (i.e. VIN and license plate) and opted for 'AutoCharge', then at first use of a public charger in the network, your EV's MAC address is linked to your name, license plate number, and VIN. At each subsequent use, you can just plug in and watch your battery charge and your wallet get slimmer.

All of that, mind you, depends on internet connection from the public charger to some back-end server of the public charger network.

I do not own a Tesla, but my even more limited understanding is that all (or almost all?) Tesla owners take AutoCharge (perhaps by another name) at a Tesla charging station for granted. Meaning the MAC address of each Tesla is part of the identity of the vehicle.

In Malaysia, I understand that BMW and smart EVs have similar AutoCharge arrangements, with MAC addresses shared by the vehicle distributor with one or more public charger networks.

wow. very informative. I'm not going to dispute what you have written coz not my domain knowledge. In SG, some charging apps don't even request any info on the EV that we drive.

Some charger brands are aware of the EV brand/model coz they have reached out to owners of certain brands to help them carry out charging tests.

There are also some chargers that will stop charging when the battery reaches 80% charged. Guess these chargers do not bother which brand/model of EV?

In Malaysia, BYD ATTO3 is the biggest single vehicle fleet. If the numbers of ATTO3, Dolphin, and Seal are lumped together, then BYD is the top EV brand fleet in Malaysia.

I'm not clear why the Malaysian distributor of BYD has not done deals, of the kind that BMW and smart have done, with one or more of the public charger networks. My best guess is based on the fact that Sime Darby Malaysia, which is the importer and distributor of most but not all BYDs in Malaysia, also has a subsidiary involved in selling chargers (both private and perhaps public).

That's very strange behaviour. If the DC charger were in Malaysia and of one of the two public charger networks I use, then I would make a telephone call and lodge a complaint with the network.

No DC charger with which I am familiar has a low enough power rating for my BYD to justify occupying the charging space for more than a few tens of minutes. A BYD ATTO 3 or Dolphin can charge at 60 kW (standard model) or 80 kW (extended range model - that's the Malaysian model specifications, but other markets may have other variants).

AC public chargers are a different animal, in the sense that a BYD ATTO 3 or Dolphin can only absorb 7kW of power.

Of course, the EV you are seeing might have an enormous battery that takes a very long time to charge, but that's quite hard to believe.

My understanding is that the back-end server of the public charger concerned would have a record of the MAC address of that EV. Not the VIN or the brand and model.

In some PC and smart devices, users can manipulate or change the MAC address. My understanding is the MAC address used by public chargers to identify an EV is the MAC address of what's called the 'communication controller'. That is very likely NOT the same as the MAC address of the infotainment tablet. The MAC address of the charging communication controller likely cannot be addressed through Android software. It might be hard coded and it might be addressable via the CAN bus.

I vacuum my BYD most every Friday. I use the V2L device to power an 230 VAC vacuum cleaner that we retired from house use. I plug the vacuum cleaner into the power board of the V2L device.

Before vacuuming, my BYD app reported 42 per cent State of Charge and forecast 205 km. A digital multimeter across the poles of the low voltage battery read 12.21 Volts.

I did not start the vehicle.

After vacuuming and the few minutes it takes to tidy and stow both the V2L device and the vacuum cleaner, my app reported 42 per cent SoC and forecast only 204 km remaining. The multimeter read 12.51 V.

Apologies if I did not make myself clear.

English is not my first language (and even worse, I do not have good vocabulary of technical terms in 华语 or in Bahasa Melayu - blame schooling that taught me a little of three languages but not a lot of any one of them!).

The issue I was trying to address was how to ensure that the low voltage battery (also known as the starter battery or 12 volt battery) of an ATTO 3 is to be kept healthy. By healthy, I mean (1) not left at a low voltage and so (2) with the lead/lead oxide plates not sulfated.

On page 94 of my ATTO 3 User Handbook, there is a sentence in articulated text (meaning a bullet point). I'll repeat that sentence here:

"In order to avoid lead-acid battery low voltage, the "Smart Charging" function will be triggered automatically when: vehicle power supply is "OFF", the power battery is allowed to discharge, and the lead-acid battery level is below a specified value."

Note the three conditions:

(1) the vehicle is OFF (meaning not ON or not STARTed);
(2) the Vehicle to Load (abbreviated as V2L or V to L or even VTOL) is used to discharge the High Voltage Battery (also known as the power battery); and
(3) the voltage of the low voltage is below some level unstated by BYD (pick a number lower than 12.7 V).

What I was trying to demonstrate by measuring the voltage across the positive and negative poles of my low voltage battery is that JUST a few minutes of using the V2L equipment (which discharges the high voltage or power battery) powering an AC electric vacuum cleaner for a few minutes was enough to lift the voltage of my low voltage battery from 12.21 V to 12.51 V. As a result, my forecast driveable kilometres dropped a little.

To repeat, nothing about turning the car ON or STARTed. If pressing the START button (or turning the car ON) was enough, then the low voltage battery would always be at a resting voltage of about 12.7 V.

I repeat, using the Vehicle to Load device, means plugging it into the Combined Charing System (CCS) socket. That socket is connected by very attractive orange colour cabling to the high voltage battery, meaning something more than 400 V on my ATTO 3.

For the tl;dr people:

leaving your car not turned "on", plugging your V2L device into the CCS charging port, and connecting to it an electric appliance such as a domestic vacuum cleaner and then using the vacuum cleaner for a few minutes to clean the car interior, means that the ATTO 3 then charges the low voltage battery from the high voltage battery.

Any time the car is “on” the 12v rail would be powered by the main battery (the car body is the 12v rail) and since the 12v battery is connected to the 12v rail, the 12v battery will get charged.

Hey guys, BYD app identifies I have root on my Android and auto shuts down ?

BYD was on my deny list in Magisk but the latest version of the app eventually was able to identify the root.

Any ideas how to hide root properly from BYD app?

It's a combination of macrodroid with "split launcher" to be run as shortcut from macrodroid on boot.
To gain "focus", just need to trigger the app again, so I'm doing split launch - waze + yt music - wait 3 seconds then relaunch yt music

Where in Malaysia, Alan? I can only write from first hand knowledge about West Malaysia (the old Malaya, the part running south from the border with Siam to the border with Singapore).

Plugshare.com is where you can see what public chargers (AC or fast DC) are where, whether they are free or paid, and what means of payment (a dedicated app, or a wave of a credit or debit card).

After Plugshare, your second resort (unless you want to use the tiny number of free public chargers) is then to install the dedicated app from one of the three of four big charger companies (JomCharge, Gentari, ChargEV, Setel etc). The dedicated apps are the most responsive to changes in the fast DC chargers (e.g. charger breakdowns, chargers returning on-line, new chargers put into commission).

Paying for charging is not as simple as it could be. Yet.

* Some charging companies only sell a bundle (e.g RM 240 for 12 months of charging, regardless of how much you use). Others have special deals for particular vehicles (BMW, Mini, Chery) even though BYD Atto 3 is No. 1 in number of cars.
* Some charging companies charge by the kiloWatt-hours you use. Others by the number of minutes you are connected to the charger.
* JomCharge and ChargEV probably have the largest number of public chargers. There are others, with only one or two fast DC chargers, that I prefer to use.

My recommendation is you (1) work out where you are planning to drive; (2) work through Plugshare.com (or the Plugshare app); and check what chargers do what you want (AC or DC, paying per kW.h or minutes or in a 12 month bundle); (3) download any dedicated charging app that is necessary; (4) always have a Plan B for a charger being out of commission.

Plugshare invites users to check in to each charger. Looking at recent check-ins tells you whether someone has used that charger recently. Users can submit a photo. That's neat because you see if a BYD has been there recently.

And be aware of half-truths. Here's my example: in the middle of Kuala Lumpur, a few minutes walk from the Twin Towers of KLCC, one of my favourite fast DC charger stations is the DC Handal station at Wisma MCA (it's on Jalan Ampang, if that helps). Plugshare reckons you can use the JomCharge app. That never worked for me. Instead, I pay for that charger by waving my spouse's debit card (my debit card doesn't work; nor does my credit card).

And there really are public charge stations that are free. Usually AC stations. For example, in the premium parking section of the Suria KLCC, you can park at 1700 (5 PM) and exit at 0500. Connected to an AC charger rated at 22kW (that's triple phase AC; Atto 3 and Dolphin can only use one phase, so 7 kW max) and all you pay is RM 17 (parking is charged per hour, but over-night the max is RM 17). The catch is you need to bring your own cable (which of course I carry) to plug into a wallbox. There's a fast DC charger in that car park in case you prefer to pay for charging than to buy a cable.

Back to using a public charger:
1. drive a BYD ATTO 3 or Dolphin front-first into a charger bay.
2 Check that the charger is operating (green lights, sometimes a green circle around a push button; read the screen display).
3 Plug the charger into your charge socket.
4 (a) Use the dedicated app to scan a QR code. Press a button on the dedicated app to activate charging. Sometimes you will have a 120 second (2 minutes) countdown while the car and charger (and the back-end server of a networked charger) talk to each other.
There are several variations on this theme including:
(b) swipe an NFC card (e.g. ChargEV); or
(c) at a central display unit, swipe a credit card or debit card and type in an email address to which you receipt/invoice will be sent.
I'm informed by a Singaporean friend that dedicated apps, such as JomCharge, allow you to register a Singapore credit card for your payment. And that a Singaporean credic card does not necessarily work on chargers that accept the wave of a card.
In general terms, prefer either a bundle (such as ChargEV which takes RM240 for a year's charging) or chargers for which you pay by the kW.hr. That's because an Atto3 or Dolphin is limited to accepting 7 kW of AC or 80 kW of fast DC, by which I mean that BYD ATTO 3 or Dolphin are disadvantaged if you are paying by the minute.
Select your charger company (and charge station) depending on where you want to go. Don't blindly choose a charging company first, download their app, register with that app, and think that's done. Plan your trip with Plugshare. Choose your chargers (have a Plan A and a Plan B, because chargers can go offline).

Most public chargers are networked (connected to a back-end server) and rely on you to have a 4G or 5G connection. ChargEV is unique in having some chargers in areas with poor wireless and wired connectivity. ChargEV supplies a NFC card that you wave to initiate charging (both of your battery and your wallet). That means you might need to allow time for a ChargEV card to get to you by snail mail (or whatever delivers things in your neighbourhood).
Every now and again you'll meet a plug that doesn't talk nicely to your car. That usually just means you need to withdraw the plug and start again, or change to a different plug, or change to a different charging bay at the same charging station.
All the fast DC chargers I've used in West Malaysia allow a BYD to charge to 100 per cent. When your State of Charge reaches 99 per cent, you have the fun of watching your rate of charging fall and even pause while your BMS balances all of your 200+ individual battery blade cells.
In outdoor charging stations in Malaysia, smart people drive their car into the bay that is shaded.

Your local retailer likely sells sunshades you can temporarily install at your windscreen while parked in a sunny charging bay. And even sunshades to cover the Sunroof.

In West Malaysia, we prefer overcast days and shaded parking, not the cruel blue sky thingie with thermonuclear radiation.
